What is Web 2.0?

The concept of “Web 2.0” began with a conference brainstorming session between O’Reilly and Media Live International. Dale Dougherty and O’Reilly noted that far from having “crashed”, the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and websites popping up with surprising regularity. Hence the Web 2.0 concept was born.

Web 2.0” refers to a perceived second generation of web development and design, that facilitates communication, secures information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities, hosted services, and applications; such as social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, and blogs. The sometimes complex and continually evolving technology infrastructure of Web 2.0 includes RSS feeds, server-software, content-syndication, messaging-protocols, standards-oriented browsers with plug-ins and extensions and various client-applications.
